Friday Favourite | Our Balcony Dwellers
You may recall an earlier blog post of mine about two little eggs that had been laid in a nest cleverly constructed in one of balcony planters. (If you missed it, you can catch that blog post here).
Vincent woke early one morning during the third week of May to find a hatched egg shell on the balcony! We peered through the blinds very gingerly so as not to disturb this new family of four and yes, both Mamma Pigeon’s eggs had hatched! Here she is, protecting her young during the first few days of their life here on earth.
I have to be honest and say that I found them rather ugly little things at first but as they grew and Mamma and Pappa left them while they foraged for food for their young, I marvelled at the entire process we had witnessed and how sweet they were growing as their feathers began to grow (do pigeons feathers actually grow?!) and whiten.
You may wonder why I didn’t capture Pappa during this time. The fact is, he was the most skittish of them all despite us tiptoe-ing past the balcony door and windows throughout. And these are the babies now!
Check the cheeky one looking at me as if to say “And… what do you want???” It’s truly wonderful that creatures are so intuitive and it was so amazing to see new life in it’s rawest form happening right there before our eyes. They’ve finally flown the nest (and their mess cleaned up!) although Mamma and Pappa came back for a few days, calling them to eat… and they both duly attended mealtime!
